The shoulder has several joints connected to it along with muscles and tendons. These are what allow you the range of motion possible with your arm. But as the shoulder is a part of the body that sees a high range and frequency of mobility, there are many conditions that you can experience.

When there are issues relating to the bony structures of the shoulder and the soft tissues attached to it, you can experience pain. This can occur when you are moving the shoulder or when you are at rest. There are also different levels and frequencies of pain. In certain situations, the pain you experience may be temporary but there are some injuries that will result in constant pain that can get worse over time. This is the time to see a shoulder surgeon. The mobility of your arm is enabled by the ball and socket joint of your shoulder. But when there is instability in this joint, it can lead to damage and injury. Shoulder instability is a condition that can affect athletes and younger people. This occurs due to overstretching of ligaments and tendons that connect the arm to the shoulder. You will experience weakness in your arm and pain when you have shoulder instability. To reverse the effects of overstretching, you can try resting for some time along with physical therapy. You can alleviate some of the pain by taking anti-inflammatory medication. For severe shoulder instability, surgery is required.

A dislocated shoulder is quite common and this occurs when the ligaments that hold the shoulder and the collarbone tear. This can be due to an injury or a fall. Once your shoulder is dislocated, you will have restricted movement and there will be a visible bump on your shoulder that will indicate the cause of the pain. You should visit an orthopaedic clinic to have the shoulder pulled back into position. The orthopaedic doctors will be able to select a treatment plan depending on the extent of the issue. If you find it difficult to raise your arm and you are experiencing a measure of pain, it could be that your rotator cuff has torn. This includes a group of four muscles that attach the arm to the shoulder. The tearing occurs due to overuse. Degeneration of the tissues can lead to tearing as well.  Treating a torn rotator cuff depends on the severity of the tear. Partial tears can be treated by physical therapy and immobilization. Surgery will be required to treat a complete tear. A complete tear of ligaments can lead to a dislocated shoulder.

Osteoarthritis can be developed by any joint in the body and this can happen to the shoulder joint as well. While there is no cure for arthritis, there are some treatment options used to relieve the pain. These are the use of anti-inflammatory medicine, physical therapy and regenerative medicine. Shoulder impingement occurs when there is a lot of pressure placed on the tissues by the shoulder blades. If not treated right away, it can lead to tendonitis or bursitis. You will feel stiffness and pain in your shoulder when there is shoulder impingement. It can be treated with physical therapy and rest.
